‘Scaling Technologies and Good Practices for Transforming the Dairy Sector of Nepal’ section with this one- Scaling Technologies and Good Practices for Transforming the Dairy Sector of Nepal
Dairy farming contributes about 5% to Nepal’s GDP and supports millions of smallholder farmers. Despite steady growth in milk production, the sector continues to face low productivity, high production costs, and persistent milk supply deficits, resulting in continued reliance on dairy imports and inefficient market systems.
Scaling Technologies and Good Practices for Transforming the Dairy Sector of Nepal is a core project under Heifer Nepal’s Milky Way Signature Program. The project adopts a value chain-based approach to improve productivity, genetic quality, service delivery, and market integration across the dairy sector. It is implemented in partnership with the Central Dairy Cooperative Association Nepal (CDCAN) and District Milk Producers’ Cooperative Unions (DMPCUs), with a strong focus on strengthening milk producers’ cooperatives through enhanced technical and managerial capacity, improved veterinary and extension services, and the promotion of hygienic milk production and good manufacturing practices at milk collection centers.
The project promotes sustainable and climate-friendly dairy systems by reducing production costs through forage-based feeding, improved herd health management, biosecurity, and efficient farm practices. It also supports the development of inclusive market systems through improved access to finance, policy engagement, and strengthened sector coordination. Scaling efforts began in Chitwan district with successful models replicated nationwide. Through strong institutional partnerships and proven technologies, the project contributes to building a more productive, resilient, and inclusive dairy sector in Nepal.
